BOSS™ 2023 Year-Round: Igniting Potential, Sustaining Excellence
At BOSS, transformation isn’t seasonal—it’s sustained. In 2023, we inspired, equipped, and empowered more than 200 Black, Latino, and under-resourced boys through year-round engagement built on our six BOSS Pillars—Economic, Emotional, Mental, Physical, Social, and Spiritual—and Good to Great principles that turn belief into action.
Scholars logged nearly 1,000 tutoring sessions, met weekly with academic coaches and mentors, and took part in college-to-career bootcamps led by BOSS alumni and CSULB graduates. Middle schoolers strengthened math and literacy foundations while high schoolers refined critical thinking and career vision.
Our boys connected classroom learning to real-world opportunity through career exposure and networking experiences with the LA Rams, AEG, Deloitte, Kaiser, Microsoft, and the Port of Long Beach. Highlights included esports immersion at Team Liquid’s Alienware Training Facility, leadership participation at LA84’s Movement Matters summit, and shadowing executives during the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final at SoFi Stadium. BOSS Saturdays and virtual Leadership Labs fostered brotherhood, self-discipline, and mastery of life skills like time management, financial literacy, and public speaking. Our 7th Annual BOSS Summer Academy at Long Beach State engaged 65 scholars in coding, analytics, robotics, and data science, with guidance from partners like Glad Academics, Algorithm & Flow, and the CSULB College of Engineering—capped by a Lakers-hosted basketball clinic linking fitness to focus.
BOSS scholars closed 2023 outperforming district peers in math and reading, with 77 of 79 graduates pursuing post-secondary education. From classrooms to careers, every experience this year reflected one truth: BOSS is proving what’s possible when belief meets opportunity.
