BOSS™ 2022 Year-Round: Expanding Impact, Deepening Excellence

If 2020 was the year we learned to adapt, 2021 was the year we accelerated. Building on lessons learned during the pandemic, BOSS delivered a full year of hybrid programming that deepened engagement, strengthened outcomes, and expanded access for Black, Latino, and under-resourced boys across Southern California.

The year began with our 4th Annual—and 1st Virtual—BOSS Weekend, which included the BOSS Showcase and BOSS Awards. Scholars met mentors representing careers in architecture, technology, law, finance, and real estate, highlighted by keynote speaker Dr. Clarence M. Lee, Jr., “The PERSISTence Coach.” The Awards celebrated leaders whose lives reflect the six BOSS Pillars—among them NFL Hall of Famer Jackie Slater, Grammy winner Harvey Mason, Jr., and LA Rams VP Molly Higgins

Throughout the year, BOSS Talks continued to inspire, featuring industry trailblazers such as Ralph Jackson (Morgan Stanley), Ray Anderson (Arizona State University), Karen Slade (KJLH), and Gary Waters, who shared timeless lessons on discipline, purpose, and perseverance.

Academically, BOSS expanded after-school tutoring and one-on-one coaching, logging hundreds of sessions across math, science, and writing. The program also introduced the Dr. Frederick S. Humphries STEM Portal, connecting scholars to HBCU-aligned opportunities and pathways into STEM fields

BOSS scholars continued to shine—like Rafael Gomez, named Student of the Quarter, whose “Rafa Rare” clothing line exemplified every BOSS Pillar from economic discipline to spiritual faith

Through it all, the message of 2021 was clear: Courage. Humility. Vision. Tenacity. No matter the challenge, BOSS remained steadfast in preparing boys not just for school—but for life.

BOSS Strong.
